.....Major Initiative Against Illegal Mining Yields 327 Arrests in Nigeria
In a significant crackdown on illegal mining, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced at a recent press conference that authorities have apprehended 327 suspects across Nigeria since the inauguration of the Mining Marshals (MM) on March 21, 2024.
Marking the one-year anniversary of the MM, Alake revealed that, in collaboration with various agencies, the ministry has prosecuted 143 individuals for illegal mining activities during this period. The MM, primarily composed of personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), is tasked with enforcing compliance within the solid minerals sector.
Looking ahead to 2025, Alake emphasized the goal of securing convictions for the arrested individuals. “These convictions will serve as a deterrent and help reinforce our legal framework in the mining community,” he stated.
The minister also acknowledged the valuable support of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Army in the fight against illegal mining. He cited recent court decisions in Kwara State that resulted in the imprisonment of two foreign nationals for their illicit mining activities, demonstrating the judicial system's commitment to addressing this issue.
Throughout the past year, the MM has reported recovering over 98 mining sites, enabling legitimate license holders to resume operations, which is expected to boost royalties and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s revenue. To date, 457 suspected illegal mining sites have been identified, further strengthening intelligence efforts in the sector.
As the government intensifies its efforts to sanitize the mining industry, Alake’s announcements signal a robust approach to combatting illegal activities that undermine the nation's mineral wealth.
